Ella Fitzgerald: First Lady of the Song

Ella Fitzgerald (1917-96) was one of the most celebrated voices in Jazz and American popular music for more than 50 years. Her virtuosic singing and unique sense of style made her a sought-after artist highly revered by musicians and arrangers alike, and a tremendous influence on generations of singers that followed. In this course, we explore Fitzgerald’s life and work through examples of her extensive recorded output—from her earliest recordings with the Chick Webb Orchestra to her associations with Count Basie and Duke Ellington and beyond—and discuss her lasting cultural impact. The First Lady of the Song continues to hold an important place in music history and in the hearts of music lovers.
