Satchmo Lecture Series at The Juilliard School

Satchmo: The Life and Times of Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong remains one of the most influential and highly regarded entertainers in the history of jazz and American popular music. His recorded output spans five decades, and his electric stage performances elevated him to the level of one of the most celebrated cultural ambassadors of the 20th century. The purpose of this class is to trace his earliest musical developments, which began very humbly in New Orleans. From there, we will use biographical information, select articles, and, most importantly, recordings to discover the full scope of his artistic journey. Along the way, we will encounter the likes of Bessie Smith, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and many more.
