The Freedom Sound: Jazz during the turbulent 60's
In celebration of Black History Month I will be leading a four part lecture series at Juilliard's Evening Division.
The Freedom Sound: Jazz during the turbulent 60s
The 1960s found the United States at a critical philosophical crossroad that had been generations in the making. Political landscapes confronted issues of inequality, segregation, and urbanization while abroad, military mobilization further divided national consensus. These factors contributed to the very fertile artistic movement that produced some of the most iconic jazz recordings to date. Through recordings, class readings and thought-provoking discussions, this course is intended to explore the critical link between the music, art, and the social conditions of a truly unique moment in time.
